When enjoying coffee in our stores, your beverage automatically comes in ceramic mugs or glassware – significantly reducing single-use cups while encouraging customers to savor the moment. Dine-in customers receive complimentary refills on hot/iced coffee and tea.

As America's first national coffee chain to accept personal cups, Starbucks welcomes reusable containers of any material at all U.S. and Canadian locations (including drive-thrus and mobile orders). This simple choice reduces waste while expressing personal style.

Starbucks has piloted returnable cup programs in 30+ global markets. In Petaluma, California, we launched an innovative program making returnable cups the default to-go option. Customers return used cups to designated locations for professional cleaning and reuse.

In select markets with specific environmental requirements, Starbucks provides compostable cups and lids made from biodegradable materials that decompose under proper conditions, minimizing pollution.

Since implementing personal cup policies, Starbucks has eliminated approximately 2 million disposable cups monthly in the U.S. alone – proving small changes create substantial results.

Participating is simple across all ordering methods:

Inform your barista when ordering. They'll accept your clean cup (without lid) and prepare your drink directly in it.

Announce your personal cup when ordering. At pickup, baristas will use contactless procedures to transfer your beverage.
